Mission Statement
The International Continence Society is a registered charity with a global health focus which strives to improve the quality of life for people affected by urinary, bowel and pelvic floor disorders by advancing basic and clinical science through education, research, and advocacy.

Vision Statement
Within a global scientific and scholarly environment which supports clinical and basic research in continence and pelvic floor disorders, the ICS strives for excellence in:
  • international cooperation through affiliation with the ICS by other national and international societies working in related areas and through collaborative projects.
  • global education of professionals by holding workshops and conferences and offering research and travel awards to centres of excellence;
  • outreach programs to improve access to continence care for the developing world through education, advocacy and service;
  • research by publication of research results at annual meetings, in the journal and by providing research scholarships and bursaries for professionals;
  • developing and advancing standards and guidelines for good clinical practice by dedicated committees, educational sessions, and local workshops;
  • advocacy and public awareness by developing fact sheets, holding an annual consumer meeting, having accessible information on the web site, and linking with other similar consumer groups.
ICS Annual Meetings

A popular workshop at an ICS Annual Meeting
The founder members decided that the society should meet annually with a different meeting chair and venue each year.

The ICS Annual Meeting remains today, one of the most valued dates in the Urological, gynaecological, physiotherapy and nursing calendar attracting in excess of 3,000 delegates from all corners of the globe, and unique with its multi-disciplinary focus on Continence. The Annual Meeting consists of a 2-day Educational Programme followed by a 3-day Scientific Programme. Abstracts presented at the meeting are published in the Journal of Neurourology & Urodynamics (the official Journal of the ICS).

Keynote speakers, State of the Art Lectures, Point-Counterpoint Discussions and Live Surgery events combine to make the ICS Annual Meeting the premier scientific event for Continence professionals, surgeons, research scientists, bio-engineers and allied professions.

In 2004 the ICS General Secretary, Walter Artibani decided on a new type of stand-alone meeting, aimed at younger medical professionals who were less likely to attend a full annual meeting. These ICS Educational Courses were designed to be at minimal cost, subsidised by the ICS, with a comprehensive 2 day educational programme. Another aim for these courses was that they be held in regions of the world that were less likely to have a full Annual Meeting, so as to further the educational aims of the ICS as a Charity.

The Education Committee Chair, Linda Cardozo was tasked with the challenge of taking the ICS message to a world audience of younger medical professionals following in the ICS multi-disciplinary tradition. With the first course in Barcelona in 2005, ICS Educational Courses have been extremely well attended and continue to showcase the highest standards in education, best practice and evidence based medicine, with speakers selected from the most respected opinion leaders in Continence. With 3 courses per year in addition to the Annual Meeting, ICS Education remains a core goal of the ICS with truly global reach.

Board & Committees
ICS Board of Trustees Meeting, Bristol, January 2009
Board of Trustees
Bristol, January 2009
The ICS has various committees and sub-committees and is managed by the Board of Trustees, elected by the membership.

It was decided at the Exeter meeting in 1971, that the ICS should have neither a permanent president nor chairman, but that the chairman would change each year and the post be held by the host for the annual scientific meeting. However since this time the ICS has now grown to having almost 2000 members and it was felt that a formal structure was needed, with the society becoming a registered UK Charity.

At the 2008 AGM after an extensive review, the leadership structure was changed once more. A large Board of Trustees was elected to lead the society, chaired by the General Secretary, together with many changes to the Articles and Bylaws. The aims of these changes were to reflect the wishes of the Membership for greater democracy with much shorter terms of office and rotating positions.
